How to Spur Prune Wine Grapes

Spur Pruning refers to the removal of the basal portion of canes. Spur Pruning will help establish and maintain vines to enhance productivity, to distribute the proper amount of food over the vine, and to regulate the amount of the crop.

Prep 'Em
Plan to spur prune from January through March while wine grapes are dormant.

     

Find 'Em
Locate the lateral arms of the grapevines, about 6 to 8 inches apart.

Select 'Em
Select two to three shoots off each spur while removing the rest.

     

Cut 'Em
Cut the shoots back to two or three buds, and then let ’em growl.
