How to Plant Sunflowers

Sunflowers are actually hundreds of tiny flowers clustered together. The disk flowers, which have both male and female components, form the center and produce seeds. The "petals" around the disk are ray flowers. Navlet's carries nine varieties which can be started in pots, packs or the open ground.

Gather Materials
Locate a sunny place in your garden. Full sun is necessary for best growth and bloom.

Mulch
After the seedlings are up, mulch the area and hand weed for the first few weeks.

Flowering
Flowering should start ten weeks after planting. When roots are established, they'll hold their own against drought and weeds.

Harvest
Harvest seeds when center of flowers turn brown or the backs of the heads turn yellow. Cover heads with netting or cheesecloth to catch falling seeds as they dry.
