How To Find The Soil Profile

How to Find the Soil Profile

Getting a first-hand look at a soil profile from your yard is an important step toward understanding your garden's soil.

    Step 1   1   Step 2

A soil profile is simply a cross section of the layers of soil.

Lift the Grass
Using a shovel, make one deep cut and follow with a second, perpendicular cut. Lift the section of grass at the apex.

2   Step 3   3   Step 4

Study the Layers
Study the three layers of the cross-section. Section 1 reveals the grass blades. Height will vary by grass type and time of year. Section 2, the Thatch Layer, is organic debris. The Root Zone, Section 3, shows how far the roots have penetrated the native soil.

Replace the Grass
Return the grass to its starting position. Simply lower the section of grass back into the soil and lightly step on it.
