When it Comes to Weeds... Take the Pro-Active Approach
by Buzz Bertolero, the Dirt Gardener

The cool, damp days and long, cold nights of winter are deceiving. While your garden seems quiet, in reality, the biggest headache of spring is active under the surface... weeds! All summer and fall, unwanted grass and weed seeds have been collecting in your garden, just waiting to spring to life. The only thing missing is moisture, and Mother Nature will certainly provide that in the coming months. So do you take the pro-active approach or allow your garden to develop into an unruly mess?

I recommend the pro-active approach, which means using a pre-emergent herbicide, now! My favorite is Monterey Weed Stopper pre-emergent for use on ornamentals, shrubs, ground covers, roses, bulbs, and trees. It can be sprayed right over growing plants without harming them. It can even be applied to areas under irrigation or prior to a major rainstorm. This product is available in either concentrate or a ready-to-use form that attaches to the end of a hose.

So my advice is spray now, or forever hold the hoe come spring.
