Mums the Word... for the Fall Garden
|
Mums provide great color during the doldrums of autumn. These easy-to-grow plants act as perennials in mild winter climates or can be grown as annuals almost everywhere. Stemming from the two Greek words, "chrysos" meaning gold and "anthos" meaning flower, Chrysanthemums ("mums") date back to 15th century Northern China, Mongolia, and Korea, and were considered to have medicinal properties. Mums were introduced to the West around 1753. |
The benefits of mums go far beyond the vivid colors of white, gold, bronze, red, purple, and pink. They are excellent cut flowers lasting long after other flowers fade and wilt.
These beauties thrive in full sun, but can tolerate some shade. They're great for accenting front entries, driveways, or patios, and will grow in pots or in the ground. On top of their beautiful colors and incredible versatility, mums are quite easy to grow and care for.
