From the Ground Up

Say Happy Trails... to those Pesky Snails
by Buzz Bertolero, the Dirt Gardener

Ever wonder how snails came to the Bay Area and your garden? Believe it or not, snails were brought to the Bay Area from France for a commercial culinary enterprise. Unfortunately, the snails were of the wrong species, and the venture resulted in failure. More unfortunate for us, the snails were dumped in a nearby stream where they multiplied and spread in all directions!

Enough about the history of snails in the Bay Area. Let's answer the big question: how do we get rid of them? Navlet's recommends Sluggo for controlling snails as well as slugs. An organic bait, Sluggo's active ingredient is iron phosphate (not metaldehyde) and is safe around kids, pets, and edibles.

Navlet's also carries other organic snail controls. Depending on where the problem is, gardeners should use a combination of controls, not just one single method. Much like watering and fertilizing, snail control is an activity that gardeners should address throughout the growing season. The Navlet's Nursery Professionals are excellent resources to help you develop a snail control strategy for your yard.
