Navlet's Mini-Clinic Archive - How To Grow Orchids
Orchids
are for everyone. Whether you live in an apartment or country house, you
can grow and enjoy orchids. They are a variety of orchids to suit any
room in your home, such as the easy to grow Cymbidiums and Phalaenopsis
to the more rare Dendrobium, Miltonia, and Oncidium.

Select
An Orchid
Look
for overall health and luster. Select the right orchid for the location
you have in mind. Most prefer average temperatures from 62 to 80
degrees.

Water
It
The
size and type of pot will determine when it's time to water. If
the pot feels light when you pick it up, or feels dry to the touch,
the orchid probably needs a drink. Use tepid water and allow the
water to flow through the pot.

Feed
It
Most
orchids grow in bark. Since bark is deficient in nitrogen, you must
supplement with fertilizer. When plants are in an active stage of
growth, feed every two weeks with 1/2 strength orchid food. Feed
with care; too much nitrogen can prevent flowering. Feed every five
weeks with a bloom-it orchid food when growth stage is inactive.

Pest
Control
Frequent
inspections can prevent an outbreak of pests or diseases. Check
regularly and watch your new buds and green leaves. Clean up as
needed. Isolate the attacked leaves so pests won't spread, then
give the plant proper treatment.
