How
To Grow Tomatoes in ContainersFew
things can match the taste of a ripe and juicy tomato... especially
when it’s fresh from your very own garden. And one of the best ways
to grow plump, healthy tomatoes is in containers, which means they
can be grown on patios and balconies, as well as in the garden. Here are four simple steps to getting started. Also be sure to speak with a helpful Navlet’s nursery professional when selecting your plants so they can share other tips and tricks.

Choose It
There are dozens of fun varieties to grow (and eat), so there’s bound to be one to match your tastes and growing conditions. Mix-and-match varieties depending upon how you like to cook. Select a BIG container for each plant, or consider an EarthBox.

Strip It
To promote a strong trunk and root system, remove leaves all the way up to the second set of mature leaves, counting from the top. This will allow you to place your tomato plant deep in the soil, promoting stability and creating more rooting surface. Additionally, this will require less frequent watering.

Plant It
Fill your container with Navlet’s Potting Soil and dig a deep, narrow hole. Bury the plant so the remaining leaves are just above soil level. If there is still a danger of frost, keep your plant protected until warmer days are here.

Feed It
If properly fed and watered, tomatoes grow fast. Definitely add a tomato cage at this point, BEFORE your plant gets too big. You may also want to consider a tomato tray, which directs water to the roots, retains moisture, limits bugs and weeds, and keeps roots warm. Bon appetit!
